"Children are not things to be molded, but are people to be unfolded."

Children reach milestones in how they play, learn, speak, behave, and move (for example, crawling and walking). Children develop at their own pace, so it's impossible to tell exactly when a child will learn a given skill. In a scientfic term 'Child Development involves the biological, psychological and emotional changes that occur in human beings between birth and the conclusion of adolescence.' Observing and monitoring child development is an important tool to ensure that children meet their ‘developmental milestones’. Child development covers the full scope of skills that a child masters over their life span including development in:

• Cognition – The ability to learn and problem solve
• Social interaction and emotional regulation – Interacting with others and mastering self-control.
• Speech and Language – Understanding and using language, reading and communicating.
• Physical skills – Fine motor (finger) skills and gross motor (whole body) skills.
• Sensory awareness – The registration of sensory information for use.

Need for a Child Development

Children are the future of our country. Developmental milestones (a ‘loose’ list of developmental skills that believed to be mastered at roughly the same time for all children but that are far from exact) act as a useful guideline of ideal development. For children to achieve their full potential, as is their human right, they need health care and nutrition, protection from harm and a sense of security, opportunities for early learning, and responsive caregiving – like talking, singing and playing – with parents and caregivers who love them.

Children from rural areas, slums and urban poor families, scheduled castes, tribal communities and other disadvantaged populations suffer from multiple deprivations related to poverty, malnutrition, access to quality health services, child marriage, poor school attendance, low learning outcomes, lack of sanitation facilities, hygiene, and access to improved water. India stands to benefit socially, politically and economically if this large number of adolescents are safe, healthy, educated and equipped with information and life skills to support the country’s continued development.

Children have the right to be protected from the incidence of abuse, exploitation, violence, neglect, commercial sexual exploitation, trafficking, child labour, and harmful traditional practices to name a few. Every children can stay protected from all these incidence if a child is well developed. A developed child can take its own stand and fight from these detrimental problems.
